Grattage is an unconventional drawing technique, the essence of which lies in scratching an image on a surface covered with wax or paraffin, painted on top with ink or gouache. Children from early childhood love such "scratches" and enjoy working with them. Today, you can buy ready-made blanks in almost any store, and we will make them with our own hands from start to finish. It is worth noting that this is absolutely not difficult, although it will take a little free time. For work we will prepare the following materials:

cardboard (it is better to take white, but you can apply and color);
wax crayons;
candle;
wide brush;
foam rubber;
mascara or gouache;
hooks for knitting, toothpicks and other pointed objects for scratching the picture.

Step one: Take the paper and paint it completelyit with crayons, gouache or watercolors (at your discretion). You can paint it with one color or make it multi-colored, as you can see in the photos. It depends on what kind of drawing you want to depict. You can also take colored paper and skip the first stage of work. Step two: Cover the entire surface of the sheetwax or paraffin. For this purpose, the most common candle, which is probably in every home, is ideal for us. Make sure that the paper is completely covered and there are no empty spaces.Now take black ink (or gouache) and completelypaint the entire surface of the sheet over the wax layer. It is better to add a little soap solution or shampoo to the paint, then the paint will not drag behind your hands and stain them during work. And one more thing. Paint on wax can roll off. To make the surface smooth, it is better to apply the ink in two layers. This should be done either with a wide brush for painting, or with a swab made from a piece of foam rubber.Now we need to leave our workpiece untilcompletely dry and you can proceed to the most important thing - creating a drawing.
