Dressing with your own hands: decoration of knitted mittens with applique in felting technique of wool
In winter, of course, we all wrap up warm:warm shoes, outerwear, etc. But at the same time, you still don't want to blend in with the general "gray" crowd. You can stand out with some bright accessories, for example, an original scarf or mittens. In this master class, we offer you to make, if not a work of art, then definitely an extraordinary thing from ordinary woolen mittens! We will need the following materials: for mittens:100 g wool yarn (plus or minus a couple of grams depending on the size); for decoration: wool for felting (shades of green, white); hot soapy water. Tools: knitting needles for knitting mittens, felting needle, thick sponges (car), bubble wrap, gauze, rolling pin. We will not illustrate the process of knitting mittens. Knit them in any convenient and familiar way for you. For example, like this. Cast on the required number of loops on two knitting needles. Distribute the loops among four knitting needles. Knit the elastic in circular rows: alternate front and back loops. The length of the elastic is from 2 to 5 cm. Then knit only front rows. In the first row after the elastic, evenly add 6 - 10 loops. Then knit without adding to the base of the thumb. Leave 5 - 6 loops on a pin, on a knitting needle instead of removed loops - 5 - 6 yarn overs. Next, knit with front loops until 2 - 3 cm remain to the intended end. Now knit the first two loops on each knitting needle together with a front loop. Close the loops in this way until all are closed. Hide the thread inside the mitten. Knit the thumb. Cast on 4 - 6 loops on four knitting needles (depending on the size). The loops from the pin are also used. Knit the thumb in circular rows of the desired length. Close the loops in the same way as on the mitten. Hide the thread inside. In the end, it is not even necessary to knit mittens, you can buy plain knitted ones in the store. As long as they are woolen, then the wool applique will hold better. So, let's get down to decorating. It is better to decorate both mittens at the same time so that the pattern is as similar as possible. The only difference is that it should be symmetrical. We stretch the mittens over the sponges. Sponges for washing cars are ideal for this. They are thick and wide.
The application will be a miniaturewinter landscape. Therefore, we lay out a triangle elongated in height from dark green wool. This will be a Christmas tree. We go over the entire surface of the triangle well with a felting needle.
We lay out smaller Christmas trees with the second green shade. We also pierce them with a needle.
The third green shade is small triangles - small Christmas trees.
The composition can be changed to your liking.discretion. You can make not a landscape, but, for example, bullfinches on a branch. And for children's mittens - and Santa Claus, and a snowman, etc. Now, to give more similarity and picturesqueness, we will mix a different shade of green with each tree. From wool of a different shade, we twist a thin thread between our fingers. From this thread we lay out patterns imitating branches on Christmas trees. And along the entire length of the thread we carefully pierce it with a needle.
We lay out snowdrifts and clouds from white wool. We also pierce the laid out wool with a needle.
Without removing the sponges from the mittens, we felt them one by oneNow on the wet side. Put gauze on the bubble wrap, then the mitten on the sponge, and gauze on top. Spray with hot soapy water. On top is bubble wrap. And roll on top with a rolling pin. Felt in this way until the wool is well felted. After felting, take the sponges out of the mittens. And leave them to dry, for example, on the radiator. After drying, the mittens are ready.
Some tips:When wet felting, we use a hot solution, so the mittens can shrink, i.e. decrease in size. This should be taken into account when you knit the mittens. That is, they should be knitted a little larger than the required size. It is better to prepare the soap solution in advance. Take the simplest soap, such as baby or bath soap, without fragrances, grate it and soak in boiling water. Add water "by eye". The solution should be thick, but at the same time flow freely.
