We learn how to sew a dress for a daughter with our own hands by detailed instructions with photos and diagrams
Sewing a dress for a little princess with your own handsInstead of buying dresses from Chinese or Taiwanese manufacturers for your daughter, you can sew a cute and elegant dress with your own hands. There are no special requirements for you, it is enough to have patience and the desire to surprise your daughter with an exclusive thing. This is exactly why we have prepared this master class.
As a source material we will haveYou will need fabric in two different shades, as well as four buttons. Let's start with the pattern. Take the main material and the lining, and cut out the front part of the bodice (with a fold) and two pieces of the back side (not folded) from each, remembering to leave a 1.5 cm seam allowance. This way, you will get six bodice elements (three from the lining material and three from the main one). Now let's cut out the main parts. Let's start with the front of the skirt, which should have a fold. The sizes will vary depending on age:
- 1.5-2 years – 53x33 centimeters;
- 2 years – 53x35 centimeters;
- 3 years – 53x37 centimeters;
- 4 years – 53x39 centimeters;
- 5 years old – 53x42 centimeters.
For the size of the back of the skirt (2 parts), age is also important:
- 1.5-2 years – 56x33 centimeters;
- 2 years – 56x35 centimeters;
- 3 years – 56x37 centimeters;
- 4 years old – 56x39 centimeters;
- 5 years old – 56x42 centimeters.
After this, we cut out two small strips,used for the bottom of the dress: length - 109 centimeters, width - 26 centimeters. Naturally, you will need to make a belt. The size here also depends on age:
- 1.5-2 years – 18x120 centimeters;
- 3-5 years – 26x120 centimeters.
Place a piece of fabric the size of the loops40x2.5 centimeters. After preparing all the patterns, we proceed to sewing. Place the 2 parts of the bottom strip of the skirt of our dress face to face. Overcast along the edges so that a ring is formed as a result. Process the cuts with a zigzag or an overlock.
Place the main parts of the skirt face to face, then sew the front panel and the 2 back pieces together. The seams should be on the sides.
Sew the back panel pieces together, remembering to leave about 8 cm at the top unsewn. Zigzag the seams and iron them.
Fold the bottom edge of the skirt in half lengthwise so that it is located on the front side of the main part of the skirt and sew it together.
We connect the lower edge with the edge of the main part and also sew, and then iron it. The seams must be ironed upwards towards the main material.
Make a stitch along the main material with an indent of 3 millimeters from the seam and iron again.
Next, we will work on the loops. We fold the pre-cut strip into two parts with the faces inside. We stitch along the long edge, making an indent of 3 mm.
Turn it inside out, iron it and cut it into 4 pieces of the same length.
After this, you can work on the bodice. Overcast the seams on the sides of the lining and the outside of the bodice, and then press the seam.
Smooth it up well about 2 centimetersbottom edge inside out. This operation should be carried out not only on the outside, but also on the lining part. We mark the place for the loops of the back part. The loops should be placed on the bodice at an equal distance from each other, while the last loop should be 2.5 centimeters from the edge. Sew.
We fix the inner and outer parts of the bodice with pins, having first folded them face to face, and overcast.
Then we sew the large part, leaving the shoulder seams open. To avoid mistakes, pay attention to the following photo. Using a machine, stitch the neckline and the sides under the armholes.
Turn the bodice right side out. Cut off the corners, make notches on the curves, and iron them.
Having connected the shoulder seams, outer parts and linings, we sew them together.
We iron the armhole material in the open areas and stitch along the armhole.
Carefully stitch the seam along the top of the skirt,forming the assembly. You should start and finish from the center of the back panel, in the place where we previously left 8 cm unsewn, while leaving the ends of the thread free.
By pulling them, we make gathers and make sure thatthey were the same size. We combine the inner and back parts of the bodice with the skirt so that it is located between them. If you have done everything correctly, then the fastener of the back side of the bodice will coincide with the unstitched part of the back panel, and the top of the skirt cut will be tucked into the bodice. We fasten all this with pins and sew, stepping back three millimeters from the bottom of the bodice.
It's time for the belt.Combine the pre-cut pieces and trim the edges diagonally. Make a seam along the edge, stepping back from it approximately 10 cm. Turn the belt inside out and iron it, then hand-sew the opening into which we turned it. Using pins, fix the belt on the sides of the dress and form a small fold on the side. Sew the belt to the sides of the dress, keeping in mind that the belt should start under the armhole. Mark the places for the buttons. Remember that the part of the dress with loops should overlap the second detail of the back of the bodice by 0.5 centimeters.
Sew on buttons and delight your child with a new thing.
