Hand embroidery is still valued todayfashionistas all over the world with beauty and originality. There are a great variety of embroidery techniques. Even today, masters of their craft come up with new ways and techniques to create their works.
In this article we will talk about one of the typeshand embroidery. Hemstitching or hardanger embroidery is one of the many methods of openwork embroidery. This type of embroidery differs from others in the special preparation for making the pattern. To perform a hemstitch (hardanger or through seam), it is necessary to pull out the threads from the fabric, and in the resulting path, openwork patterns are assembled from the remaining threads. Beginning needlewomen can be advised to start hemstitching on canvas. This fabric allows you to easily remove unnecessary threads. Later you can use other fabrics.
It’s better to start a master class with a detailedexplanations and photos to make the Hardanger lessons more understandable. If the explanations and lessons described below are not too clear, you can watch the video lessons (this should not confuse beginning craftswomen). Despite its beauty, hardanger is quite rare today, so finding good video lessons or a master class for this type of needlework is not so easy, but we tried to find the best and most interesting for you.
Hardanger technique
Well, now the conversation will go directly on preparing for the implementation of a pattern in the style of hardanger.
Starting the seam, you need to properly fix the workingThread. In this kind of hardanger, as in other ways of embroidering knots there. To fix the thread, you need to make a few small stitches at the beginning of the through seam.
Merezhka »Brush»
Hem "Tassel" This method is the basis of the basics. The simplest type of hemstitch, which is used to create more complex types of hardanger. After watching the video lesson, you can start working from the lower right corner and move to the left. A needle and thread are inserted into the right corner of the prepared strip, then the thread is fixed with several stitches and brought to the front surface of the work. Next step: entwining a small number of threaded threads with working thread. With a needle you need to hook 3 to 5 threads as desired and twist the resulting bundle, making a loop. The next stitch must be made after the resulting bundle; after each bundle, the working thread must be tightened. Using this method, all subsequent brushes are made at an equal distance. You can see how the seam is made in the video.

Merezhka "Column"This is a living example of whatThe first hardanger described above is the main component of many other species. The “column” consists entirely of “tassels” made on both sides of a pulled strip of threads on the fabric. You also need to start from the right corner. After completing one side of the hemstitch, the working thread is carefully transferred to the opposite side, on which the tassels are also embroidered. Important: the number of threads pulled into a column on both sides must be the same, and the stitches must be the same size. Only then will the columns turn out smooth, identical and beautiful.
Merezhka "Split"
Hemstitch “Split”Again to complete thispattern you will have to use a “brush”. As in the previous methods, one edge is embroidered using the usual “tassel” method, but there is one nuance. There should be an even number of tassels, otherwise the pattern will look unfinished. Next, on the opposite side, to make a tassel, you need to grab half of the first bunch at the same time as half of the next one. Otherwise the process is no different from the main one. The result of the work: the columns are not straight, but split into two equal halves. The resulting pattern seems to be composed of small, neat triangles.
Merezhka "X"
Hemstitch “X”This type also applies to the mainhemstitch embroidery methods. A prepared hemstitch with an even number of stitches is the basis for making this type of hardanger. The needle and working thread should wrap around two stitches in the middle of the end-to-end seam. Having carefully secured the beginning of the thread in the first column, you need to pick up the next column with a needle and twist both columns with a free loop. You need to thread a needle into this loop and tighten the working thread. To make the resulting knot strong, you need to repeat the loop. In this way we embroider the entire hemstitch and, accordingly, at the end of the work it will become clear why an even number of columns is needed.
"Openwork skirt"
Hemstitch “Intertwined columns”Next methodhemstitch has several names: “simple openwork hemstitch”, “intertwined columns”. However, performing a hardanger is not that difficult. This type is based on a “column”. Hardanger is very similar to the “X” stitch, only the number of columns involved in one knot increases from two to a maximum of 6. Once the simple embroidery has been completed, you can begin working on the intertwined columns. Just as in the previous needlework, we fasten the working thread, only now a pair or three columns on one side and the same number on the other will participate in the formation of the knot. By passing the needle under the far column, the remaining number of columns is grabbed and twisted in the middle. Having secured the thread, the hemstitching is done in the same way until the very end.

And for this pattern the hemstitch is first embroidered"column". Next, the columns are combined in pairs, so that one is pulled to the other on one side. At the other end of the needlework, you need to shift the junction of the posts, i.e. Each new loop will connect one column from the previous top connection to the new free one.
Merezhka "Flooring"
This hardanger requires primary processingColumns. The tendency is traced, the harder or more expressive the hemming, the more preparation from the simple types of hemstitch it requires. But this should not stop novice masters, video lessons and a master class on this painstaking craft will certainly help.
Hemstitching with “flooring” Let’s return to the “flooring”.Having prepared the through seam, you can begin to work on the flooring. Anyone who has ever darned knitted socks using grandma’s method will immediately understand everything. Having secured the thread as usual, from right to left, a small number of stitches are placed on the needle, so that the first stitch is under the needle, the next one is above the needle, and so on. You don't need to embroider too long, it won't be pretty. The last column is wrapped around the thread and the needle returns back, but this time so that the lower columns are at the top. It turns out to be a kind of woven piece of fabric. These actions are done until the middle of the through seam, then, from the middle, you need to fill in the next number of columns using this method. In this embroidery, there is no need to tighten the working thread. It is worth noting that the appearance of this type of hardanger can be anything. It all depends on your imagination.
All the above methods are hardangerare performed on one threaded strip of thread. But handicraft methods are possible in which the hemstitch width will be more than 1.5 cm, and several unpulled threads are left in the middle of the end-to-end seam.
Merezhka "Panka"
"Punk" hemThis method of embroidery is donejust on a wide strip, in which the middle is occupied by 2-3 unpulled threads. Basically, the “panka” serves as a beautiful edge for the main large pattern in the product. It is recommended to perform such needlework close to the edge. In some descriptions of the work, “punk” may be called “understitching” precisely because of the design of the edge. Hardanger is embroidered as follows: tassels are created not only along the edge, but also in the middle, along the left strip of thread. It is important to make the first stitch from the bottom up and diagonally, while capturing the required number of threads. Then the working thread is brought to the front side, just as when embroidering a regular tassel, then placing the needle horizontally, the thread returns to the place of the resulting tassel at the top. The seam is made absolutely identically, with a return to the top row. As a result, the tassels are embroidered simultaneously on both sides of a thin row of unpulled threads left in the middle.

Based on “punk” or “substitching” it is performedmany more complex and interesting patterns. Having tried your hand at simple hardanger embroidery, you can make more complex versions of the work. After watching video lessons and receiving a master class not only for beginners, making hardanger will become easier. In the photo you can see how multi-colored threads, beads and larger beads are used for beauty and grace.
