The main purpose of curtains is to protect in the morning frombright sunlight, and in the evening - to keep the privacy of the residents of the apartment from prying eyes. Therefore, as a rule, the curtains on the window are made of dense fabric. But in a number of cases, it is perfectly permissible to use variants of translucent curtains and perforated curtains that let sunlight pass through. This design option can be used in addition to the standard thick curtains. We suggest today to see a few ideas on how to make original perforated curtains from felt by one's own hands. Content:
Master-class: curtains from felt by one's own hands
Necessary materials and tools:
- felt (or other dense fabric);
- needle or thread sewing machine;
- Velcro for fastening curtains to the cornice.
⇒ Step 1. Prepare a piece of felt or other dense fabric that will not crumble. The size of the cut depends on the width of the window and the desired length of the curtains. ⇒ Step 2. Take a cup, glass or jar of suitable diameter. Put the felt on a flat surface and circle the contour of the container with a pencil. To save fabric, the second circle draws close to the first, the third - to the second, and so on. The second row of circles is also drawn close to the first row, and the circles of the upper row are better placed in the notches formed by the circles of the lower row, again to save tissue. If you do not need to save fabric, then cut the felt into a strip. Each strip is folded four times, fastened with pins, then circle the contour of the glass and cut. So you get four circles at once, which will save you time. Another option how to do just two curtains from the cut fabric we will consider in the next paragraph. ⇒ Step 3. Cut out all the drawn circles. Do not worry if they turn out not ideal, because this curtain is handmade. ⇒ Step 4. Put the circles in rows. The length of the row will depend on the width of your curtains. ⇒ Step 5. Start to sew a number of circles. You can do this manually, but you can sew on a sewing machine, which will be much faster. When the longitudinal rows are ready, sew them into one sheet. ⇒ Step 6. It remains to attach the curtains to the cornice. You can use Velcro, rings or loops from the braid. Done! Some tips: you do not need to use a circle shape and one color. You can experiment with a color solution, building gradients of shades or forming a color pattern. Also, you can combine rows of circles of different diameters or cut instead of circles ovals, rhombuses, flowers or butterflies.
Perforated curtains from felt: 2 in 1
And now a little trick! From the cut of the fabric, you can make two perforated curtains with your own hands! The secret is that the circles (or other figures) you carefully cut with a sharp clerical knife or scalpel so that there are gaps between them. Cut out the figures in this way you sew in the blind as described above. And the perforated canvas turns into another light-permeable curtain! Such a set of curtains will look very impressive on two neighboring or even on one window.
Curtains made of felt and other materials in the form of windows
Another interesting and original projectPerforated curtains imitate the abstract combination of different windows with frames, which is very unusual and conceptually looks on the usual window or as a screen in the interior. Necessary materials and tools:
- cuts of various dense fabrics (felt for crafts, wool, suede, natural or artificial leather);
- marker or pencil;
- needle or thread sewing machine;
- selected fastening of the curtains to the eaves.
⇒ Step 1. On each section of the fabric, draw a marker or pencil different stylized windows with vintage or modern frames. This can be simple rectangles, one-piece or with small cut-out holes, rounded squares, etc. Previously, you can search the Internet and print some templates, which you will then use as a stencil. ⇒ Step 2. Carefully cut out all the shapes. Use a sharp scalpel or a knife la craft to cut out the inner areas of the window. ⇒ Step 2. Lay out your windows on a flat surface, experiment, placing them, until the result will not satisfy you. Windows and shapes can and should be placed on top of each other. Remember that you will then need to sew the entire composition. ⇒ Step 3. Now, sew everything into a single canvas using a sewing machine. Pre-sweep all parts. ⇒ Step 4. Attach the curtains to the cornice and enjoy the view! The sunlight that slides through the slits creates an amazing atmosphere in the interior of the room.
