Quilling – this is a form of art, the essencewhich consists of creating all kinds of paintings and compositions by twisting narrow and long strips of paper. With the help of such art, you can decorate objects, create unusual decorative items, jewelry, etc.A little bit of history This type of needlework within English (from the word “quill”) is translated as “bird feather”. If Japan is considered the birthplace of origami, then quilling was born in Europe. Back in the late 14th century, monks used paper rolling techniques to create a variety of medallions using bird feathers and paper with gilded edges. Even from close inspection, the beautiful creations gave the illusion that they were made of gold stripes. Unfortunately, paper is not durable, so few of the medieval masterpieces have been able to survive to this day. But the ancient technology has reached us. Every year it becomes more and more popular. Nowadays, the art of quilling is widespread in Western Europe, especially in Germany and England. However, paper rolling experienced a new life in the countries of the Far East, where the vast and rich traditions of plastics and graphics raised the work with paper tapes to a completely different, higher level. And in South Korea, an association of admirers of paper plastic art was formed, which was able to unite followers and adherents of various areas of paper creativity. Many people associate paper with something fragile and short-lived. However, quilling – This is the kind of art that completely refutes such judgments. If you put a mug or any other heavy object on a filigree stand made of paper, then none of the paper curls will even think about deforming or changing their shape. A variety of bowls and vases for sweets are assembled from paper strips, which can be used for their intended purpose without fear for their safety. Quilling – This is the kind of creativity that allows you to discern special possibilities in the most ordinary paper. Tools and materials for quilling In order to master the paper rolling technique in the shortest possible time, you will need special tools; first, you can get by with an ordinary store where you can find everything you need. A short list of required tools is presented below:
- awl.Select a tool with a diameter of no more than one millimeter. Most often, the awl has a cone-shaped shape, and this is inconvenient for work. You can find a hardened rod of a suitable diameter that will be used for winding paper spirals;
- tweezers.Its tips should be thin and tightly connected. This tool performs high precision work. Choose tweezers that don't have nicks on the tips, because you don't want marks on the paper;
- scissors. To cut paper most accurately, you need to choose a sharp enough tool;
- glue. There are no special recommendations here. Your task – choose glue that dries quickly and does not leave marks on the paper. Try starting with PVA.
So that you can easily mark the futurecomposition, prepare a set of drawing tools. You may need a pencil, ruler and compass. When it comes to the paper strips used in quilling, you have two options. You can purchase ready-made strips in specialized stores for creativity. But if you are just starting to get acquainted with this type of creativity, then you can cut paper ribbons yourself. Their average width is about 3 mm, but this value – not a prerequisite. Another important point to consider when making strips is – This is the weight of the paper, it must be at least 60 grams per m². These parameters are indicated on the packaging. If the weight is less, then the paper tapes will not curl neatly, and the shape will not hold. Quilling technique At first glance, it may seem that the paper rolling technique is quite simple: the strips are twisted into a tight roll. The most convenient way to start this work is to twist the edge of the paper quilling tape onto the tip of the awl. When the middle of the spiral is formed, it is most convenient to continue working without a tool. It will be most convenient to work with your fingers, so you can feel how evenly the paper roll is being formed and adjust the progress of work during the process. As a result, you will get a tight spiral, the diameter of which will be less than one centimeter. It will become the basis for future various forms. A tight paper roll is unraveled to the required size, the tip of the paper is fixed with glue, then the desired quilling figure is formed from it.Such rolls can be givendifferent shape. There are about 20 basic shapes used in quilling. However, the principle of their creation is very similar: roll and pinch, in a word, use your imagination, and you will get a lot of different elements.
