Small Cool 2011: consider every meter of area
We continue to review design projectsinteriors of small apartments as part of the American competition Small Cool 2011. Today, there are two projects that are leading in the “tiny” category, that is, “a very small apartment”. Ariel from Los Angeles, California is the happy owner of an apartment of 40 m². “What do you love about your apartment?” I recently had to move into an apartment that was smaller than my previous one. I decided that my goal was to make this small studio apartment a place where I would really love to spend time. The resulting interior of the apartment is a complete reflection of who I am - fun, creative and a little unusual. I love that all my favorite things fit, but at the same time it doesn’t feel cramped and cluttered. Even though the room is small, friends love to come over and hang out here! “What was the most challenging part of decorating the apartment?” I wanted to separate the bedroom and living room areas, but not in ways that would visually make the room even smaller. So I designed a bookcase system using IKEA spring shelves that I painted white. My lime green shelves frame the perimeter of the sleeping area, with the space in between covered with translucent removable panels. At night, my bedroom lights up like a jewel box!
Heidi Furnishes Apartment in Chicago, Illinois49m². "What do you love about your apartment?" Every inch of this space is used. I feel like I'm living in a luxury hotel with a great home office/workspace and a spacious closet that's over 6 meters long. What more could you want? "What was the hardest part about furnishing the apartment?" I moved here to start a new life, from a much larger house. The hardest thing was dealing with the fact that my possessions were so small now... But now I have less stuff and more life! I'm free and happy!
