Spinning. The Spindle and a Foreign Friend “Drop Spindle”

Spinning. The Spindle and a Foreign Friend “Drop Spindle”

"Three girls were spinning under the window late in the evening.» It was not for nothing that I began the article with this quote. ? I think that almost everyone has come across such a wonderful invention as a spindle at home or in the country at least once. Having twirled this truly amazing thing in our hands, we most often put a tick somewhere in our own subconscious: «I need to go online, see how they spin with this thing» and then the spindle returns to its place until better times! I am no exception, I have a real spindle at home, but I did not go further than looking at the pictures on it and thinking about how you can get a beautiful thread with this «stick». Until today, I have not gone further! ? Let's figure out this tricky art together today and consider what spinning is. Spinning wool — This is essentially twisting the thread until it reaches a certain thickness and strength. I tried to spin the thread by hand - without a spindle or other devices, simply twisting the wool. The activity is fascinating, but I did not last long. I rubbed my fingers, spent a lot of time, got a short piece of thread and even now I do not remember what I did with it. ? This is taking into account the fact that I sometimes felt from wool and my hands are used to it! Having wandered once again through the vastness of the world, I discovered the following. You can spin using: 1. a spindle; 2. a foreign friend of the spindle - Drop Spindle, which in translation is a hanging spindle or it is also called Drop Spindle ? 3. a mechanical spinning wheel; 4. an electric spinning wheel. We will learn about the last two next time, but I want to introduce you to the first two today. SPINDLE (support spindle) This is the same spindle that we know from fairy tales and cartoons since childhood. This is what is in almost every home and what we no longer know how to use.The spindle is a rodpointed on one side, weighted on the other and having a narrowing. The narrowing is used to secure the thread. The main difference of the Russian spindle is that it is placed on a support. The support can be a special stand or a glass plate without bulges and irregularities. You can check whether the support is suitable for you and whether you can spin with it as follows: place the spindle on the plate with the thick end down, clamp the top with your right hand with the middle and thumb fingers, then sharply rotate the spindle along the pad of the thumb and close the index and thumb fingers to form a ring, the spindle should rotate freely in this ring itself. The stopping spindle is picked up with two fingers so that it does not fall over. Hand spinning using a support spindle consists in securing the thread in a recess. Often a small piece of already spun thread is used for this, it is tied on the depression, and tow (unspun fiber) is screwed to the tail. After this, you can choose one of the following methods: wind the thread along the entire length of the spindle or make a fixing loop at the end. Start rotating the spindle, gradually pulling out the tow. As the thread twists, it is wound onto the spindle. You can spin both from a homogeneous fiber and using a warp. Having searched for videos using a support spindle, only video clips of the group Alisa! ? Oddly enough, a search using English helped. The video is foreign, but everything is clear from it. PENDANT SPINDLE (DROP SPINDLE) Now let's get acquainted with a foreign brother - a pendant spindle. The difference between the hanging spindle and the supporting spindlespindle by structure and spinning system. Drop Spindle has a hook for fixing the thread and a weighted disk. There are upper and lower hanging spindles, it depends on the location of the hook. The thread is fixed on the base with a large part, then fixed on the hook and they begin to rotate, releasing the spindle "in flight". ? Hanging spindles differ in thickness, length and weight. For example, there are such sets.I found the video again and again it's in English, butthe girl shows in great detail: I already want to try it. I'll definitely find a spindle when I get home and try it! ? Having read and viewed so much information about the spindle, the thought of the usefulness of spinning itself arises. As a loving mother, I care about the development of my child. Any modern development center is aimed at fine motor skills and coordination, which we often do at home: we play with cereals, draw with our fingers and hands, felt, try to embroider, rewind balls of yarn. I think later, when we are a little older, we will begin to master the spindle. After all, spinning develops coordination, which involves both the right and left hemispheres, and work with both hands at once, and tactile sensations, all fingers work. I think the spindle will be useful not only for children, but also for adults with certain types of diseases. After all, everything new is well forgotten old! ? Did you know that you can not only buy a spindle, but also make it yourself! ? About this in the following articles! I appeal to craftswomen! If you have the opportunity and desire to record a Russian-language video with detailed instructions for those interested in spinning, I will be grateful to you and with GREAT pleasure I will post your video on this site! • Olga:The article is very interesting, and the videos are detailed, but I would like to disagree with the probability of finding a spindle in every home. I was interested in spinning when I was a little girl, but I have never seen a spindle closer than in a museum. I am sure that many will agree with me: in our time, a spindle is a curious but rare artifact, especially for those who grew up and spent their entire lives in the city. I would really like to hold one in my hands at least once, not a store-bought one, but a real antique spindle. Alas, in my entire not very long life, I have never managed to do this.
 • : Hello, Olga! Interesting observation! Is it really true that you didn't find any acquaintances who had a spindle? And where do you live, in what city! I am a city person and from the cradle I was brought and lived in the city. My mother also lived in the city from an early age, her mother too, but my mother's grandmother lived in a regional settlement near Moscow. In my house there were as many as three spindles, one of which was even handmade. And these spindles were my great-grandmother's. Perhaps someone in your family had spindles, but they were thrown out because they were no longer needed!
 • Olga: Hello, Elena. All my relatives and I are city dwellers, from Kharkov and Chernigov. I had no one in the village or even in the old city houses. I didn’t have any close friends in the village either. When I was a small child, my family had a dacha not far from the village, but we didn’t have any strong friendships with the villagers. Then the dacha was sold, and any connection with any rural area was broken. So it’s not surprising that I’ve never seen a real spindle, only a spinning wheel once in a museum. Maybe someone in my family had a spindle, most likely on my father’s side, since my mothers came from a very famous pre-revolutionary noble family, but neither I nor my relatives had ever encountered spindles or even spinning wheels, although all the women in my family were very keen on needlework, unlike most of my friends and acquaintances. So yes, it is possible that some people have not only never seen a spindle in their lives, but are only familiar with rural life by hearsay, and my family is a clear example of this.

 • Oksana Sakhalin: Thank you very much for the interesting article and video! Personally, I missed information here on how tow itself is prepared. I will be glad to visit this site again. I wish you creative success!

 • Mila_8854:Thank you for the article in time. My son has a dog and we combed a lot of wool and thought about how to spin it ourselves. We have an electric spinning wheel, but somehow it doesn’t work out. We’ll have to learn. Thanks again. Lots of interesting and instructive information.
 • Margarita54: Hello, Elena!Indeed, it is rare to meet a woman who can spin. I was taught this in the 70s by the owner of the house where we rented a room as students. I used to do it with pleasure, and I have not lost the skills now. I recently bought a kilogram of combed sheep wool at the market and I spin with pleasure. The hand spinning wheel was preserved from my nanny, it is probably over a hundred years old. I want to say that you can't spin on any spindle. Those that are now sold in stores are purely decorative, they cannot be used in work. The spindle should be thin, light, with a small thickening at the tip, not varnished under any circumstances - otherwise the thread will slide.
 • : Hello, Margarita! Very interesting! I'm going to write to you by email! ?

 • Ekaterina Gorges: Hello!Thank you for the interesting and competent article! The video is in Russian on YouTube. I have free and paid videos on learning spinning. Simple and without rubbed fingers )))
