Literally translated, Candlewick is a wick. So, in Russian it sounds like a wick style technique.
Simply put, embroidery in the Candlewicking style iscontour embroidery on coarse fabric with threads of the same color. Historically, this embroidery technique got its name because of the threads that were used to twist candle wicks.
Traditionally, embroidery with wicks decoratedbed linen, towels, quilts and curtains. It originated in the days when American women, accompanying their merchant husbands, tried to create beautiful things from what was at hand. And these were the simplest undyed fabrics and threads, which were cheap and widely available.
Currently there are problems with fabrics and threadsNo. But, mainly, they use natural materials - calico, linen fabrics and cotton threads. Moreover, now they use non-ferrous materials in Candlewicking. Which makes the finished work even more impressive.

Master class on Candlewicking


  • Select a template for Candlewickingor make it yourself. On thick paper, draw an outline of the desired shape with a thin, dark marker. It could be a flower, a butterfly or an artsy letter. Using a thicker marker, place bold dots at equal distances along the line. The template is ready;
  • Prepare fabric of suitable size. It can be muslin, it's easier to move the drawing;

  • Transfer the design to the muslin.The fabric is quite transparent, so the template is placed underneath and the pattern is copied. If you are an experienced embroiderer, then you probably have a light box for such purposes. To avoid slipping of the paper with the template, pin it to the fabric with pins. Outline the contours with a simple pencil, and the points with a washable marker;
  • After disconnecting the fabric and the sheet with the picture, make sure that all points are exactly transferred;

  • Stretch the fabric over the embroidery frame;
  • Now prepare the thread. Completely suitable for this thread of floss. Depending on the size of the nodules and the thickness of the embroidered seams, you can use 4, 6 or 12 threads;
  • Now you can start work. The points on the diagram can denote both the French knot and the stitch boundaries. Do not rush when embroidering the first knots to get the embroidery skill, practice is necessary;
  • Accurately follow the diagram. Choose in advance the system by which you will fill the drawing with stitches: from left to right or from top to bottom. The main thing is to prevent contamination of the finished part of the work;

  • First of all, make a pattern of knots and satin stitch, if present. Small elements of stitches are also performed at this stage. Lastly, figures with volume are embroidered;
  • Then beads and rhinestones are attached for decoration;
  • The next stage will be a clam. Place a sheet of sintepon and another fabric, for example poplin or coarse calico, under the working fabric. Over the entire area, quilt the fabric with the synthepone for reliability;

  • Now it’s time to sew all the contours of the volumetric figures back with a needle stitch, the seam should be tight - two or three threads;
  • Is the drawing complete? Then take out the backing fork. A ready picture sent to the laundry, to remove the markup on the fabric;
  • Carefully iron the work with the iron from the wrong side. For more gentle ironing, place a damp cloth on top of the embroidery, and move the iron from top to bottom so as not to damage the nodules;
