The play of light and shadow: the lamps that give the figure shadow
Japanese artist Kumi Yamashita, living and working in New York, creates amazing installations, the main theme of which is the play of light and shadow. Numbers, letters, and figures scattered chaotically on the wall acquire meaning when directed light falls on them. An unusual theater of frozen shadows is born - silhouettes of people and faces. The artist describes his works as follows:"I make shadow out of light, sometimes light out of shadow, but in both cases in the same way. I take objects, shape them and place them in a certain place from a single source of light. Consequently, the finished work includes both material and immaterial objects. This union gives birth to art - the play of light and shadow."Even a simple piece of paper, slightly wrinkled, casts a shadow in the form of a face profile. From a distance it is completely unclear where the shadow of a sitting person comes from. Take a closer look, the whole secret is in the shelf or chair on which the person is sitting. Such installations are more suitable forexhibition halls and galleries of contemporary art. But you can imagine such decor in the interior of a modern apartment. A sconce on the wall, used for reading, can cast no less interesting shadows due to nearby objects or an unusual shape of the lampshade. Source
